Music sessions for kids @ Fearless Space.

Over the past 3 years, all of Fauna have entered the (mostly) wonderful world of motherhood! It hasn’t always been easy to work our string quartet rehearsals and meetings around so many little ones, so sometimes we just bring them along for the ride! Something we did enjoy doing with our little ones, which didn’t involve the possibility of our instruments being stood on, was toddler friendly yoga with Carrie at Fearless Space. These are small classes with a focus on adult yoga, but the kids can join in if they fancy (or eat snacks in the corner while playing with cars).

During one of our sessions, we discussed how great the space would be for putting on small informal concerts for children and their carers. We had been discussing for a while about designing gigs which we could also bring our kids to, with no pressure on the parents to keep their children quiet or stop them from dancing or running around. We’ve been at our fair share of events where we have been tutted at or shushed because out little darlings are making too much noise, and we wanted to break away from that type of stigma surrounding classical music. So “Wee While Sessions’ were born!

Fearless Space is perfect for this type of event. It is a completely blank canvas, with the right amount of space for what we wanted to do. There is enough room for us to set up as a quartet and also have a good amount of seating for around 10 adults and 10 kids, but it still feels cozy and inviting. The acoustics are also pretty good which is nice for us too!

We kept the concert short (around 40 minutes) to suit the attention span of a toddler, but they were so engrossed in the music that we ended up doing a few encores! We kept the programme varied with something for everyone including The Bare Necessities for the small people and Psycho Killer by Talking Heads for the big people. Dancing, singing and running in circles were all encouraged, and everyone had a great time! Unfortunately our second session was cut off in it’s tracks with the arrival of COVID-19, but we can’t wait to get back up and running when it is safe to do so.

Carrie is an absolute dream to work with too. She is so full of positivity and will do anything she can to help keep everything running smoothly. We are so lucky to have this venue on our doorstep in Glasgow, and her online yoga classes have certainly helped keep us sane in lockdown.

We hope to see you at our next Wee While Session in the not-so-distant future!
